Marilyn states throughout the film that all men she dated in the past were older than her apart from her new affair with Colin Clark whom is younger. this shows she either preferred older men as she was usually controlled and didn't have much freedom. Colin whom is younger also presents to treating her different than her older husband as he treated her like a person giving her freedom and actually caring about her feeling as putting her before him.

Colin was the youngest character in the film being inexperienced yet determined to succeed in meeting Marilyn despite warning and jealousy of the older men. He was treated poor by older men because of his age and was deemed not important until he became close to Marilyn where he gained attention.
