Preliminary Exercise:

On Thursday last week we completed our preliminary exercise.

A continuity task involving filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting in a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue. Demonstrate match action, shot/reverse shot and the 180- rule.

Q: Technically, what is the 180 degree rule in the context of this task?
The 180° rule is a cinematography guideline that states that two characters in a scene should maintain the same left/right relationship to one another . When the camera passes over the invisible axis connecting the two subjects, it is called crossing the line and the shot becomes what is called a reverse angle.

Q: What is match on action?

Cutting on action or matching on action refers to film editing and video editing techniques where the editor cuts from one shot to another view that matches the first shot's action. A common example is a man walking up to a door and reaching for the knob.

Q: How did it go?
for the first time recording and creating a scene was a completely new experience for me so for a first time I was happy and proud of the creation. However, there was some clear weaknesses such as noise in the background which is easy to spot and better to act upon.

Q: What would you change/ do better if you had the chance to do the task again?
sound quality and the picture quality could be improved and also the zoom to see the cast in a better perspective and zoom. I would also change to make the setting clear with no background noise or movement disrupting the play even though you can argue it makes the film more realistic.
